Small spaces, considered slowly

A room for
reading.

A forgotten corner. A favourite book.
A little room to be yourself.
Watch a quiet place come together.

One corner. Four small changes.01 / 04
A quiet corner, becoming a reading room An illustrated room with an arched window and wooden floor. As the story unfolds, a sage armchair and woven rug arrive, followed by a bookshelf, side table and open book. Daylight turns to dusk and a pendant lamp glows. The Reading lamp switch can change the light at any time. A STUDY IN SLOW LIVING N

First, a little breathing room.

01 — Make space.

Begin with the corner you usually walk past. Move the spare boxes, the little table that collects receipts, the things waiting to belong somewhere else. Leave the floor bare for a day and notice its proportions. A reading spot needs less room than you think: enough for a generous seat, somewhere to set a cup, and a clear path around both. Keep a little wall visible. The empty space is part of the furniture.

Leave room around the edges

02 — Find the light.

Place the chair beside the window, rather than directly in front of it. Light should fall across your shoulder and onto the page; a slight turn keeps glare out of your eyes. Choose a seat deep enough to tuck a leg under, with arms that let your shoulders drop. Slide a flatwoven rug beneath the front feet. Its texture softens the floor, while its edges quietly mark this corner as a room of its own.

Daylight, over your shoulder

03 — Bring the books.

A low, open bookshelf gives the corner a little weight without closing it in. Mix upright books with a few horizontal stacks, and leave one shelf partly empty so the collection can breathe. Pull a small wooden table within easy reach of the chair; you should be able to set down a cup without leaning forward. Add the book you are actually reading, open to your place. A room feels personal when it holds evidence of use.

Keep the good things within reach

04 — Stay awhile.

As daylight fades, let the window become a darker, quieter part of the room. Switch on a shaded lamp with a warm bulb, around 2700 kelvin, and keep its light below eye level or screened from your seated view. The page should feel bright without the whole room needing to be. Drape a light throw over one arm, put your phone somewhere out of reach, and sit down. Nothing else needs arranging. You can simply turn the page.

A warmer light. A slower evening.

A small corner.
A little more room for you.
